On Monday, March 6, 2017, shortly after 8:00 p.m., an EF3 tornado touched down in Oak Grove, Missouri. The tornado was approximately 400 yards wide and damaged or destroyed about 483 homes and 10-12 commercial structures.
How You Can Help
CSL has been the primary source of social services in Oak Grove for decades. Now, we're helping many of the residents rebuild after this tragic event. Our goal immediately after the tragedy is making sure residents can meet their basic needs. Our primary collections include:
- Non-perishable food items: Our preference is items that can be easily stored, prepared, and consumed. For families living in a shelter or hotel, we want items that are easy to eat. We also need disposable plates, napkins, and silverware.
- Personal hygiene items: We need everything you'd find in your bathroom.
- Household cleaning items: Families need everything from bathroom cleaners to kitchen cleaning supplies.
- Gift cards: Gift cards for gas, groceries, home repair, and other basic needs are very appreciated.
Tornado Recovery Center
The Long-Term Recovery Committee is opening a new location at 709 South Broadway Suite D in Oak Grove. This location will work in conjunction with CSL to aid families. The CSL-Oak Grove office will continue to provide food, water, cleaning supplies, paper items, and personal items; and the new location will store new clothing items, and act as a furniture exchange for those needing to replace furniture. This site – called the Tornado Recovery Center – will be open the same hours as CSL-Oak Grove. (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9a-Noon and 1p-4p).
We are looking for gently used furniture – clean with no tears or stains – to be donated. Donation receipts will be available. To schedule drop offs, please contact the CSL office and leave a message at 816-690-8213. We are also looking for volunteers to staff the new location. We are looking to have two volunteers (at least) for each three-hour shifts. To volunteer for a time, please contact Gina Parr at CSL.
How to Donate
Please take items directly to our Oak Grove office. The office has regular hours of 9:00 a.m. - Noon and 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. You may contact our Site Manager, Gina Parr, at email@example.com or (816) 690-8213 to make alternate arrangements.
How Families Get Help
Families need to come to CSL's office at 1408 SW Austin Street, Oak Grove, MO 64075. We can help families with the above listed items, plus bottled water and clothing. Additionally, we have financial assistance available to families impacted by the tornado. Financial assistance will be determined after an interview with the family to assess what coordination may exist with other disaster relief organizations. Except in very rare cases, financial assistance will be provided in the form of a check to a vendor that the family owes money to (insurance, etc.).
Normally, the CSL office is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9:00 a.m. - Noon and 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. You may contact our Site Manager, Gina Parr, at or (816) 690-8213 to make alternate arrangements.
Families in Grain Valley, Odessa, Bates City, and other unincorporated areas of Jackson and Lafayette Counties that were impacted by the tornado may also come for assistance.
