BASIC NEEDS INITIATIVE

THE FIRST STEP IN THE JOURNEY OUT OF POVERTY

Assisting people in poverty with their most basic needs is an opportunity. Not only to help meet those needs, but to begin to build trust. Trust that can open the door to providing guidance in securing solid employment, making smarter financial decisions, and finding a pathway out of poverty.

THE CHALLENGE FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN POVERTY

It can end up feeling like a constant fight just to survive with no sign of any way to escape.

For many of our neighbors living in poverty, it is a challenge to take care of the most basic needs - food, shelter, and clothing. Basics that we take for granted are the things that they struggle with every day. This is before they even think about everything else that they face. Like getting help with medical needs, or figuring out how to navigate the complex system of government assistance or aid from other organizations. It can be difficult to think about anything other than meeting their basic needs. As a result, it can end up feeling like a constant fight just to survive with no way to escape.

Nutrition

CSL is an equal opportunity provider, helping families in need access healthy and nutritious food – typically, three to five days' worth, based on household size.

Shelter

Through donations and assistance programs, CSL helps families facing eviction or foreclosure with rent or mortgage payments – as well as helping with other housing needs like utility payment assistance or funds for repairs. We also help those struggling with homelessness find permanent housing solutions.

Personal care

When neighbors come for nutritional assistance, they can also receive basic personal hygiene items.

Medical support

Through a partnership with Kansas City's Medicine Cabinet, CSL provides qualified applicants with non-emergency medical support such as prescription medicine, eyeglasses, hearing aids, and more.
