Neighbors helping neighbors since 1916.
For 110 years, Community Services League has stood alongside individuals and families facing hardship—providing immediate help, building lasting stability and creating pathways toward brighter futures.
Building stronger families and stronger communities
Community Services League is a nonprofit organization serving neighbors throughout Eastern Jackson County and the Kansas City region.
We help people meet immediate needs while working alongside them to build greater financial, housing and employment stability. Rather than addressing one challenge in isolation, CSL looks at the complete picture and helps each person create a practical path forward.
Every neighbor’s situation is different. That is why our work begins with listening, building trust and connecting people with the combination of resources, coaching and encouragement they need.
Help for today. Hope for tomorrow.
Stability is rarely created by solving only one problem. CSL combines immediate assistance with long-term coaching, practical tools and supportive relationships.
Help for Today
Food, housing assistance, utility support, transportation help and other essential resources give families room to breathe and help prevent a difficult moment from becoming a deeper crisis.
Hope for Tomorrow
Career training, financial coaching, housing services and ongoing support help neighbors increase income, build assets and create greater stability for themselves and their children.
Stability is built one connected step at a time
Our services work together to help neighbors move beyond crisis, strengthen their foundation and pursue the future they want for themselves and their families.
Housing Stability
Support with rent, utilities, homelessness, homeownership and creating a safe, stable place to live.
Employment

Community Development
Partnerships and neighborhood investments that strengthen local communities and expand access to opportunity.
A small group of neighbors started something extraordinary
CSL’s story began in 1916, when twenty young women in Independence came together to help neighbors who were sick, struggling or living in poverty. Among them was Bess Wallace, who would later become First Lady Bess Truman.
Their belief was simple: when neighbors care for one another, communities become stronger. More than a century later, that same spirit continues to guide CSL.
How we show up for our neighbors
Our work is built on relationships, respect and the belief that every person deserves the opportunity to build a more stable future.
Dignity
We see each person as a neighbor with strengths, goals and a story worthy of respect.
Relationships
Lasting change begins when people feel heard, supported and no longer alone.
Opportunity
We help remove barriers and connect neighbors with resources that open doors.
Community
We work alongside residents, donors, volunteers and partners because stronger communities are built together.
